Short answer

Updated: August 2026

How do I ship wire rod from China to Nigeria?

Wire rod goes by sea in a full 20 ft container, door to door with clearance and duties included. It is loaded by coil weight with every coil secured, and hot-rolled rod and cold-drawn wire are declared separately.

  • Write deformed (ribbed) and undeformed (plain round) wire rod as separate product names.
  • Coils must be fixed in the container so they don't roll into the walls at sea.
  • The delivery address needs a forklift or crane to unload; tell us when you ask for a quote.

Risk alert

Common risks

Where this cargo most often gets held up. We check each point before it ships.

  1. Item 01

    Rolling coils

Without wedges and lashing between coils, the motion at sea makes them roll and press against each other, damaging both the container walls and the coils.

  2. Item 02

    Diameter and strength grade missing

Wire rod is classified by diameter and use. Without the diameter, grade and whether it's ribbed, the classification and duty rate are hard to determine.

  3. Item 03

    Quoting by volume

One cubic metre of steel can weigh more than 7 tonnes. Estimating by volume gets both the container type and the quote wrong. Give us the total weight when you ask for a quote.

  4. Item 04

    Poor rust protection and strapping

Containers get damp at sea, and unprotected plates and coils will rust. Broken straps can injure people when the container is opened. Pack against damp and secure the load before shipping.

Shipping wire rod to Nigeria: FAQ

What's the difference between wire rod and rebar?

Wire rod is coiled bar of smaller diameter (7213); rebar is mostly straight bar in fixed lengths (7214). They load differently and are declared under different product names.

How many tonnes of wire rod fit in a 20 ft container?

It is loaded to the container's limit of about 21 tonnes, but it also depends on whether the coil weight and number of coils can be placed and secured. We give you a loading plan from your list.

Does steel to Nigeria need SONCAP?

Most steel products fall under SONCAP; whether yours does depends on the HS code. Send us the product names and specifications and we check and explain before booking. If it's needed, we can handle it for you.

Not sure which documents you need? See the clearance document checklist or send us your product names.
