How do I ship steel pipes from China to Nigeria?
Steel pipe goes by sea in a full container, door to door with clearance and duties included. The length sets the container type, the weight sets the load, and seamless vs welded and galvanised vs black pipe are declared separately.
- A 20 ft container is about 5.9 m long inside; pipe of 6 m and longer needs a 40 ft container or a flat rack.
- Large-diameter pipe can be nested (smaller pipe inside larger pipe) to raise the load per container.
- Galvanised, seamless, welded and square/rectangular tube have different HS codes, so the product name must state the process and specification.

- Item 01
Damaged pipe ends and surfaces
Without end caps on the pipes and timber between bundles, rough seas deform the pipe ends and scratch the coating.
- Item 02
Nested pipe not listed separately
Smaller pipe nested inside larger pipe must be listed with its own specification and quantity, or the piece count won't match the packing list at inspection.
- Item 03
Quoting by volume
One cubic metre of steel can weigh more than 7 tonnes. Estimating by volume gets both the container type and the quote wrong. Give us the total weight when you ask for a quote.
- Item 04
Poor rust protection and strapping
Containers get damp at sea, and unprotected plates and coils will rust. Broken straps can injure people when the container is opened. Pack against damp and secure the load before shipping.

How do I ship 12 m steel pipe to Nigeria?
A standard 40 ft container is about 12 m long inside, so pipe up to 11.8 m usually fits. Full 12 m lengths or over-length packed pipe go on a flat rack, and for large volumes a breakbulk ship can be considered. We give you a loading plan from your list.
Do square and rectangular tubes count as steel pipe?
Yes. Square and rectangular tube is generally classified as welded steel pipe under 7306 and declared by size and wall thickness. It loads the same way as round pipe.
Will 6 m steel pipes fit in a 20 ft container?
No. A 20 ft container is about 5.9 m long inside. Lengths of 6 m and over go in a 40 ft container, and 12 m lengths in a 40 ft container or flat rack. We give you a loading plan based on quantity and weight.
Does steel to Nigeria need SONCAP?
Most steel products fall under SONCAP; whether yours does depends on the HS code. Send us the product names and specifications and we check and explain before booking. If it's needed, we can handle it for you.
