Shipping cement to Nigeria

Cement is one of the most typical heavy cargoes. The container is chosen by weight, and if damp protection isn't done properly it arrives caked.

Short answer

Updated: August 2026

How is cement loaded for shipping from China to Nigeria?

Ship it in a full 20 ft container loaded to the weight limit. Palletise and shrink-wrap the bags, and line the container against damp.

  • A 20GP takes about 21 tonnes. Cement reaches the weight limit first, so empty space left in the container is normal.
  • Small bags are palletised and shrink-wrapped; jumbo bags can be loaded directly. At destination, arrange a forklift or manual unloading to suit the packing.
  • Add a damp-proof liner or desiccant. Temperature swings on the equatorial route cause condensation in the container.
  • 45 - 60 days from pickup in China to signed delivery in Nigeria, including clearance and delivery.

Risk alert

Common risks

Where this cargo most often gets held up. We check each point before it ships.

  1. Item 01

    Condensation and caking

Big temperature swings at sea cause condensation in the container, and the cement cakes and becomes unusable. You need a damp-proof liner, desiccant and sealed packing.

  2. Item 02

    Overweight containers

Exceeding the container's weight limit leads to rejection at the terminal or extra charges, and road transport in Nigeria has weight limits too. Load to the limit, not beyond.

  3. Item 03

    Burst bags

Small bags of cement burst easily during handling, and the spilled powder contaminates other goods in the container. We recommend palletising and shrink-wrapping, and not consolidating with other goods.

Shipping cement to Nigeria: FAQ

Can cement go in a shared container?

We don't recommend it. Cement is a heavy powder, and burst bags contaminate other goods in the container, so it is generally shipped in a full container.

How much cement fits in a 20 ft container?

It is calculated from the container's weight limit: about 21 tonnes for a 20GP, subject to the carrier's and terminal's actual limits.
