Import requirements in Ethiopia
Rules change. We check each product by name and HS code before shipping.
- Item 01
Import licence and foreign exchange payment
The importer must hold a valid import licence and arrange foreign exchange and payment through a local bank under National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) rules. We do not recommend shipping until the bank arrangements are in place.
- Item 02
ECAE conformity assessment
The Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise (ECAE) inspects and tests imports subject to mandatory standards, most often building materials, electrical goods and food. Scope follows the Ethiopian standards authority's publications.
- Item 03
EFDA food and drug control
Food, medicines, medical devices and cosmetics must meet the requirements of the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA); they generally need product registration or an import permit and must enter through designated ports.
- Item 04
Electronic single window declaration
Import declarations are filed through Ethiopia's electronic single window (eSW); details on the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading must match.
