Short answer

Updated: August 2026

How do I ship iron bars from China to Nigeria?

Iron bars go by sea in a full container, door to door with clearance and duties included. Choose the container by length and load by weight; the product name states the cross-section shape, size and material.

  • List round, square and flat bar with their specifications separately.
  • Hot-rolled and cold-drawn (cold-formed) bar have different HS codes.
  • Bright cold-drawn bar needs anti-rust packing.

Risk alert

Common risks

Where this cargo most often gets held up. We check each point before it ships.

  1. Item 01

    Mixed loads without bundle tags

When several cross-sections share a container and bundles aren't tagged one by one, inspection can't check them against the packing list.

  2. Item 02

Not enough rust protection for cold-drawn bar

Cold-drawn bar has no mill scale and rusts most easily at sea. Oil it or wrap it in anti-rust paper.

  3. Item 03

    Quoting by volume

One cubic metre of steel can weigh more than 7 tonnes. Estimating by volume gets both the container type and the quote wrong. Give us the total weight when you ask for a quote.

  4. Item 04

    Poor rust protection and strapping

Containers get damp at sea, and unprotected plates and coils will rust. Broken straps can injure people when the container is opened. Pack against damp and secure the load before shipping.

Shipping iron bars to Nigeria: FAQ

Can iron bars and rebar share a container?

Yes. Both are heavy cargo, so the container is planned by total weight. Just list the product names and specifications separately.

How is alloy steel bar declared?

Alloy steel bar is classified under 7228, a different HS code from ordinary carbon steel bar. State the grade and alloy composition.

Does steel to Nigeria need SONCAP?

Most steel products fall under SONCAP; whether yours does depends on the HS code. Send us the product names and specifications and we check and explain before booking. If it's needed, we can handle it for you.

Not sure which documents you need? See the clearance document checklist or send us your product names.
