Shipping steel plates to Nigeria

Steel plate is heavy and large, so loading starts with floor load and securing. Hot-rolled, cold-rolled, galvanised and stainless plate are declared separately.

Short answer

Updated: August 2026

How do I ship steel plates from China to Nigeria?

Steel plate goes by sea in a full 20 ft container, door to door with clearance and duties included. The loading and securing plan follows the weight and size of each piece, and the product name states the rolling process, coating and thickness.

  • Steel plate is dense, so a 20 ft container usually reaches its limit of about 21 tonnes before it fills up.
  • Whole sheets wider or longer than the container door go in an open-top or flat-rack container.
  • Hot-rolled, cold-rolled, galvanised and stainless plate have different HS codes and duty rates; you can't just write "steel plate".

Risk alert

Common risks

Where this cargo most often gets held up. We check each point before it ships.

  1. Item 01

    Concentrated load damaging the floor

Plates concentrated on one spot in the container exceed the floor's local load capacity. Spread the weight with timber and lash the load.

  2. Item 02

Damp and rust on the surface

Cold-rolled and galvanised plate are sensitive to moisture. Pack in anti-rust paper or plastic film and put desiccant in the container.

  3. Item 03

    Quoting by volume

One cubic metre of steel can weigh more than 7 tonnes. Estimating by volume gets both the container type and the quote wrong. Give us the total weight when you ask for a quote.

  4. Item 04

    Poor rust protection and strapping

Containers get damp at sea, and unprotected plates and coils will rust. Broken straps can injure people when the container is opened. Pack against damp and secure the load before shipping.

Shipping steel plates to Nigeria: FAQ

Are coils and flat plate shipped the same way?

They are charged the same way, with the container planned by weight. Coils need coil cradles or wooden pallets to stop them rolling, so the loading plan differs. Tell us whether it's coil or flat plate when you ask for a quote.

What should I watch for when shipping stainless plate to Nigeria?

Stainless plate is classified under 7219 / 7220, a different HS code from carbon steel plate. State the grade (e.g. 304, 201) and surface finish in the product name, and mention it if the plate is film-coated.

Does steel to Nigeria need SONCAP?

Most steel products fall under SONCAP; whether yours does depends on the HS code. Send us the product names and specifications and we check and explain before booking. If it's needed, we can handle it for you.

Not sure which documents you need? See the clearance document checklist or send us your product names.
