Cheap Shipping from China to Nigeria: How to Compare Total Costs
There is no single cheapest way to ship from China to Nigeria. Compare sea LCL, FCL and air freight on total cost, including clearance, duties and delivery.
About 4 min readContent checked on
No company or shipping method is the cheapest for every shipment. The lowest total cost depends on the volume, weight, value and urgency of your goods and on where they need to end up in Nigeria. Compare quotes on the same goods and the same scope, including clearance, duties and delivery, not on the freight rate alone.
- Sea LCL suits smaller lots; a full container suits large loads; air suits urgent or high-value goods.
- Only compare quotes that cover the same goods, size, route, duties and delivery scope.
- A self-pickup rate and a door-to-door rate are different products, so their unit prices cannot be compared directly.
- Consolidating suppliers, compact packing and accurate declarations are the costs you control.

Sea LCL, full container or air: which fits your shipment
Each mode is the lower-cost choice for a different kind of shipment. Start from your goods and deadline, then compare total cost within the modes that fit.
| Mode | Usually fits | What drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sea freight, LCL (shared container) | Smaller lots, mixed products, goods from several suppliers | Volume in CBM, unpacking and splitting at destination, clearance and delivery |
| Sea freight, full container (FCL) | Large, non-urgent loads that can fill a container | Container size and how well you fill it, destination port charges, clearance and delivery |
| Air freight | Urgent, small or high-value goods | Chargeable weight (actual or volumetric), clearance and delivery |
How to compare quotes fairly
Two quotes are only comparable when they price the same job. Before choosing on price, check that every quote is based on:
- The same goods: product names, quantity and declared value.
- The same size: total weight and volume (CBM), with the same packing.
- The same route: the same pickup point in China and the same destination city in Nigeria.
- The same scope: whether export clearance, Nigerian clearance and import duties are included.
- The same delivery: self-pickup at the port or airport, or delivery to your address.
If one quote is much lower than the rest, ask which of these items it leaves out.
Why self-pickup and delivered rates cannot be compared on unit price
A self-pickup rate ends at the port or airport: you collect the goods and arrange transport inside Nigeria yourself. A door-to-door rate also covers delivery to your address. The door-to-door rate per CBM or per kilo is higher because it includes more work, not because it is worse value.
To compare them, add your own local transport cost to the self-pickup quote and compare that total with the door-to-door quote.
Actual weight, volumetric weight and CBM
Freight is charged on how much space your goods take, or on how much they weigh, depending on the mode.
- Actual weight is what the cartons weigh on the scale.
- Volumetric weight converts the size of the cartons into a weight. Air freight is charged on whichever is higher, actual or volumetric weight. Carriers set the conversion, so ask for it with your quote.
- CBM (cubic metres) is length × width × height of the cartons, in metres. Sea freight is usually priced by CBM.
Light but bulky goods usually cost more by air than their weight suggests. Compare them by sea as well.
Costs you can control
- Consolidate suppliers: if you buy from several suppliers, send everything to one of our China warehouses so it ships as one consignment.
- Pack compactly: since freight is charged on volume or weight, less empty space in the cartons means a lower bill.
- Match the mode to the deadline: for goods that are not urgent, compare sea freight with air freight.
- Declare accurately: correct product names and values avoid reassessment, fines and storage charges at the port.
What to send for an accurate quote
Send these details through the quote form or WhatsApp, and we reply with a quote within 30 minutes.
- Product names and quantities (a product list or photos helps).
- Total weight and volume, or carton count and carton size.
- Pickup city in China and destination city in Nigeria.
- Whether you need self-pickup or delivery to your address.
- When the goods are ready and when you need them.
Frequently asked questions
Is sea freight always cheaper than air freight to Nigeria?
Not always on total cost. Sea freight is usually lower per kilo for large or heavy loads, but small urgent shipments can cost less overall by air once time and handling are counted. Compare both on the same goods and scope.
Why is my quote higher than a freight rate I saw online?
Advertised freight rates often cover the sea or air leg only. Check whether a rate includes clearance at both ends, import duties and delivery before comparing it with a quote that does.
